So here we are it's Spring again where they say hope springs eternal especially when the subject of Baseball comes into play. Does a young man's or women's fancy turn to Baseball or for that matter who says you have to be young. With all of the excitement over the Nationals' new stadium it seems that almost everybody wants to talk Baseball and we've really gotten into the subject on the show.
Daniel L. Wann Ph.D is a sports psychologist whose specialty is the obsession that fans have with sports and how it affects their daily lives. He spoke about fans who are so obsessed that they can't function in the office on opening day. And we also spoke about those who spend endless vacations traveling to every to every major league and even minor league ballpark. Some even compete to see who can wear the most obsure minor league cap. But mostly he spoke about the history tradition and lore of Baseball and how it can bond generations of families together.
Bill Ibach is a former Rockville resident who wrote for both the Washington Post and the Baltimore Sun. He represents a company that is selling plaques which feature a photograph of the new Nationals' stadium on opening night along with some actual dirt from the game. A good deal of the proceeds benfit the Boys and Girls Clubs of greater Washington. But while talking to us about the plaques he just happened to mention that he was part owner of the Continental League an independent minor league that has several franchises. Am I jealous as there is a fantasy come true. If you want to own your own minor league franchise go to www.cblproball.com. Of course you do need to bring your own money.
And if I wasn't already drooling when we talked to James Denton of Desperate Housewives fame he started startled with a revelation that was more than the fact that he suffered from respiratory allergies. It seems he is part owner of the Orange County Flyers based in Fullerton Califonia another independent minor league team that just happens to have forner Met and Expo catcher as their manager. My mouth was hanging wide open. They have neat merchandise and caps to. Go to www.goldenbaseball.com/orangecounty for details.
And finally since it's a new Baseball season I like to check on my favorite minor leaguer. It's none other than Rex Rungren a shortstop who has been playing in the Florida Marlins organization at class AA for the Carolina Mudcats. Apparent he's good field but not a good hitter. For Info try www.RexRundgren.com. And if the name is familiar he definitely is Todd Rungren's son. Perhaps he doen't want to work and just bangs on the drum all day. But whatever the case is he better see the light.
