One thing about doing a morning radio show is always expect the unexpected. And yes the truth really is stranger than fiction. We had a chance the other day to talk to Phil Collen the shirtless wonder lead guitar player from 80's icons Def Leppard. Since we found out that Phil Collins almost became a Bugaloo why not dish up some dirt on Phil Collen.
For example back in the 80's he and fellow guitarist the late Steve Clark were known as the terror twins due to all of their wretched excesses. But how things change. Phil has been an admitted vegetarian for 25 years now according to his own recollection and proudly meditates each night before going on stage. He also claims that the secret to his youthful looks and physical prowess is his engaging in kick boxing. This is probably also the reason that he still doesn't wair shirts.
Even though he has been living in LA for years the Cockney accent remains and through it all we still managed to ask about the great Donny Osmond cover up. It seems that somewhere around 1994 Phil played guitar on Donny's "Eyes Don't Lie." But think about it- what would Def Leppard fans think if they knew Phil had played on a Donnie Osmmond album. What would it have done to the band's image. So there was a massive cover up. Phil was credited on the song as Rory James Collen which just happens to be the name of his son.
So you figure 14 years have passed now and maybe Phil would come out of the closet so to speak. So I asked him and yes he's out. Not only did Phil Phil readily admit to playing on the song but gloated about what a nice guy Donny was and what great friends they became. Donny even helped Phil move his daughter's crib.
So what strange happenings go on in this Rock and Roll life style. Phil Collen even gloated about the night Country star Tim McGraw sat in with Leppard and performed Pour Some Sugar on Me. As Tim's late dad Tug exclaimed. "You Gotta Believe"
